Media has been an integral element of society however its role has never been fully recognized. It is responsible for the dissemination of significant information, educational opportunities, entertainment, and most importantly serves as a public forum for discussion of important issues and acts as a watchdog on government, business, and other institutions. Historically, the importance of media was recognized during the 1450s. With rapid technological advancements and the incessantly increasing industrialization, new forms of mediums were discovered for the dissemination of information and broadcasting posing innumerable challenges.
Presently, the Internet is the fastest mode of penetration of communication and thus content regulation has become a sore point of almost all the government. Today, it is extremely crucial to educate people regarding their responsibility towards a civil society through the appropriate exhibition of knowledge and information. Therefore, it is obligatory for all of us to understand the amalgamation of the two disciplines namely, “Law” and “Media” so as to ascertain the role of law in regulating the conduct of media, especially when the frequency of access to information has increased multifold.
The present National Seminar organized by the Kirit P. Mehta School of Law, Mumbai aims to study the intrinsic relationship between Media and Law and attempts to set the stage for a bountiful discussion around the viability of media laws with special emphasis on the recent developments in the concerned field.
